The Palais des Papes is about 550 m / 9 minutes' walk from Hôtel de Garlande, through the pedestrian lanes of Avignon's historic walled centre. The route crosses typically Provençal squares and passes by the place de l'Horloge.

How far is Hôtel de Garlande from the Pont d'Avignon (Pont Saint-Bénézet)?

The Pont d'Avignon is about 700 m / 10 minutes' walk from Hôtel de Garlande. It is reached on foot through the historic centre towards the Rhône.

Can you explore Avignon on foot from Hôtel de Garlande?

Yes. From Hôtel de Garlande, all of Avignon's major sites within the walls are reachable on foot in around ten minutes: Palais des Papes, Pont Saint-Bénézet, place de l'Horloge, Musée du Petit Palais, Collection Lambert, Saint-Didier church, the Halles market. A car is neither necessary nor recommended for a sightseeing stay.

Where to stay in Avignon and choosing your area
Where should I stay in Avignon to explore the city on foot?

To explore Avignon on foot, the best choice is to stay within the walls (intra-muros), inside the ramparts: you reach the Palais des Papes, the Pont d'Avignon, the museums, theatres and restaurants within a few minutes, with no need for a car. Hôtel de Garlande, on rue Galante in a quiet pedestrian street, offers exactly this positioning: maximum centrality and night-time tranquillity - a rare balance in the historic centre.

Which area should I choose in Avignon?

The intra-muros area is the most sought-after for a stay in Avignon: it concentrates the historic monuments, the cultural life, the restaurants and the Provençal atmosphere. Within the ramparts, the area around rue Galante, place Saint-Didier and place de l'Horloge offers the best balance between proximity to the Palais des Papes and quiet nights. Conversely, staying outside the walls (towards Montfavet or Le Pontet) means a car or bus journey for every visit.

Should I stay intra-muros in Avignon?

Yes, staying intra-muros is generally the best option in Avignon, especially for a stay of less than four days: the historic centre lets you reach most of the city on foot and fully enjoy Avignon's unique atmosphere, particularly during the Festival. Hôtel de Garlande illustrates this advantage: set in a peaceful pedestrian street, it combines historic immersion with quiet nights.

What is a boutique hotel, and is Hôtel de Garlande one?

A boutique hotel is an independent, human-scale hotel (generally fewer than 30 rooms), with a strong architectural and decorative identity, personalised service and an atmosphere different from that of the chains. Hôtel de Garlande is a family-run boutique hotel of 11 rooms set in a 17th-century Provençal townhouse, run by Emmanuelle and Stéphane. Each room has its own decor, which makes it a sought-after alternative for travellers tired of chain-hotel standards.

Is Hôtel de Garlande suitable for a romantic stay in Avignon?

Yes. Hôtel de Garlande is regularly chosen by couples for a romantic weekend in Avignon: the intimate atmosphere of the townhouse, the location in a quiet pedestrian street in the historic centre, the rooms with their unique character and the personal welcome from Emmanuelle and Stéphane make it a fitting setting for a stay for two. Dinners on a terrace, sunset over the Palais des Papes and strolls through the intra-muros lanes complete the experience.

Why choose a boutique hotel rather than an Airbnb apartment in Avignon?

A boutique hotel like Hôtel de Garlande offers services an Airbnb does not: a personal welcome, restaurant and sightseeing recommendations, homemade breakfast, daily housekeeping, luggage storage, 24/7 contact in case of emergency, and regulatory compliance (tourist tax, fire safety standards, accessibility). At a comparable price, you also benefit from the owners' local knowledge - useful during the Festival d'Avignon or to discover lesser-known spots. The Hôtel de Garlande apartments combine the independence of an Airbnb (kitchen, space, terrace for "La Madeleine") with the services and welcome of a hotel.

Is the area lively?

Hôtel de Garlande is located on rue Galante, a pedestrian street in Avignon's historic walled centre. The area is lively by day and in the evening during the tourist season and the Festival, but the street itself stays quiet at night thanks to the absence of car traffic. On foot, you will find theatres, restaurants, shops and Avignon's main monuments nearby (Palais des Papes, Pont d'Avignon, place de l'Horloge).

Festival d'Avignon
Where should I stay during the Festival d'Avignon?

During the Festival d'Avignon (the official Festival IN + the Festival OFF), it is strongly recommended to stay intra-muros so you can reach the theatres on foot - city buses are saturated and taxis hard to get. Hôtel de Garlande is a few minutes' walk from most of the IN venues (Cour d'honneur of the Palais des Papes, Cloître des Carmes, Gymnase Aubanel) and at the heart of the OFF circuit. The nights remain peaceful thanks to the pedestrian street. Booking well in advance is recommended, ideally as early as January.

What are the dates of the Festival d'Avignon in 2026?

The Festival d'Avignon takes place every year in July (the official Festival IN + the Festival OFF). For the exact dates and ticketing of the upcoming edition, please check the official websites festival-avignon.com and festivaloffavignon.com, which are always up to date. Hôtel de Garlande traditionally sells out several months in advance: be sure to book early.

Does the hotel stay quiet despite the Festival?

Yes. Hôtel de Garlande is located on rue Galante, a pedestrian street in Avignon's historic centre away from the large open-air stages. You benefit from being close to the theatres and the festival buzz, while enjoying a peaceful environment for sleeping. Several regular festival-goers come back every year for this rare balance.
